what if you dont tip doordasher

The restaurant industry has been decimated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Existential questions have arisen. Could this crisis herald the demise of tipping or a rise in the minimum wage for tipped workers has long been a topic, but not so often has it had the same safety implications as it does now, when workers are trying to enforce public health legislation from the customers' tips.

For proponents of the no-tipping movement, this would seem to be an ideal time to bolster their case for fair salaries. Especially in 43 states that have a minimum wage for tipped employees, who can make as little as $2.13 per hour.

What about Doordash?

If you read our complete guide to Doordash tipping, you know almost everything about the tipping system for Doordash orders.

You probably already know that there isn’t one correct answer about the tipping amount and the tipping being made in advance using the feature available on the app versus tipping in person.

However, if you've ordered using the Doordash app before, then you've probably wondered to yourself, what happens when you don't tip? Well, at BestReferralDriver we are a team of experts when it comes to delivery apps. Here’s what happens when you skip the tipping option and why most Doordash drivers would generally advise against it.

1. Is It Bad To Not Tip Doordash

Before we get started, it's important to remember that while tipping is the standard in the US, how much you tip a service provider is entirely up to you.

You can also decide to not leave a tip if you really don't want to. But, here's why you should tip your delivery driver.

Dashers are small business owners, and, unless they work during peak hours, they generally don't bring in that much money.

The average DoorDasher only makes between $14-$24 per hour.

There is no minimum wage for delivery drivers and they never know what they’re going to make from day to day. It varies according to the number of deliveries they are able to make and the time of the day.

Unless they choose to deliver by bike , delivery drivers are required to use their own vehicles for deliveries.

This means that they are responsible for their car maintenance and they do not get reimbursement for gas expenses.

That's why delivery drivers rely heavily on tips.

Not tipping delivery drivers is unpleasant and disrespectful, unless you are extremely unsatisfied with the service offered.

Suzanne, a Dasher on Twitter said: “Alright major PSA, if you can afford to have food delivered by DoorDash or UberEats or some type of delivery platform, please for the love of God tip the damn driver! It’s so aggravating that no one tips anymore. End of my rant for the day.”

Another Dasher says: “If you’re ordering door dash from a restaurant that’s 30 mins from your house and not specifying a generous tip, you should expect to wait a long time for your food. No one wants to drive for an hour for a lousy $2 tip. Don’t want the expense? Pick up your own food.”

From a customer point of view, the Doordash business model, based on charging restaurants a percentage commission fee for every order made on its platform and customers with delivery fees, penalizes customers.

Despite the high volume of orders, prices have risen to absolutely insane levels. Drivers do not get tips because no one has any money left or wants to pay even more after paying the already high posted prices for the items they’ve ordered.

2. What Happens If You Don’t Tip On Doordash?

So, what happens if you don’t tip your DoorDasher? Generally, nothing happens. It's not a huge deal to not tip in America. Indeed, tipping is customary but not mandatory

First of all, Doordash drivers cannot see tips on the details of a delivery request, unless they use the Para app.

Para is an app that shows delivery drivers the tip amount prior to delivery (if the customer tipped in advance).

Since nothing happens if you don’t tip your DoorDash driver, the only consequence is that your driver will earn less money than they would have if you had tipped.

So, while tipping in advance does not lead to changes in the delivery’s speediness, some Dashers get really angry from not getting tips.

In a viral TikTok video, a DoorDash driver says she ate a customer’s order because they gave a small tip.

Finally, since I believe that human nature is fundamentally gentle and compassionate, you must be aware that your “no tip order” or your “$1 tip order” can be heartbreaking.

If you are a TikTok user, you will find many clips that raise a debate about the importance of tipping.

We found it interesting to share with you the story of a TikToker.

The Doordash driver on TikTok shares how little you can make with delivery jobs. In addition to his $1 tip, he made $2 from the delivery app for a full hour of work. That's not even enough to cover gas.

“You know, I wish people knew what it was like to deliver for Uber Eats, Postmates, DoorDash,” he says. “I just spent an hour driving around for a $1.19 tip. How am I supposed to survive like that? I just wish people knew what it was like. I hope they understood.”

3. What is the Doordash No Tip No Trip?

Doordash drivers are 1099 independent contractors. When they get a delivery request, they can choose whether to accept or reject it.

In the past, Dashers were able to see upfront information in a delivery request such as the Doordash base pay and the tip amount.

Recently, Doordash changed the information displayed on the delivery request by hiding any tip information included on it.

Without knowing in advance how much the tip will be in an order makes it harder for Dashers to pick the orders that will pay the most.

Basically, delivery drivers cannot reject low-paying offers and pick only the best orders to make the most money based on the tipping amount.

Recently, we received a message from a Doordash user feeling extremely offended. She told us that she ordered from Doordash not too long ago and got a text from her dasher a few minutes after.

He said “No tip, NO TRIP if you’re too cheap to tip you can get your food yourself gas ain’t cheap, bye”.

On social media platforms, the debate about how much money food delivery app customers should tip before or after receiving their meals - if any at all - has increased.

A TikTok video from a DoorDash driver shows a pile of bags filled with food orders that have allegedly been sitting at the restaurant for hours because no driver wanted to take them since no tip was included.

The TikTok user said: “These have been sitting here for 4 hours because no Dashers would take non tip orders. No tip, no trips, the worker told me no Dashers, Uber Eats, or Grubhub went to get the orders.”

4. Is It Ok To Not Tip Doordash Drivers?

Online ordering and delivery services like Doordash bring many benefits to customers.

You can save time ordering in advance and receiving goods delivered to you.

In the United States it is customary to tip contractors. The one instance in which it is acceptable to not tip your Dasher is when you are extremely unhappy with the service.

Keep in mind that some Doordash issues cannot be fixed directly from the delivery drivers who are not always responsible for a customer's bad experience.

To help you decide, here are some common (and not as common) scenarios and whether you should or shouldn't tip if they occur.

Bad Service

When you order using the Doordash app, you pay for the items you order and also for the service. If you receive good service, 15-20% is customary.

In major cities of the U.S., 20% is considered to be a “good tip.” However, bad service happens! Bad service may include cold food. Dashers are required to protect the food they are delivering using an insulated bag.

If you are unhappy with your order, you have the choice to not tip at all.

You can also leave $1 as a clear indication that the experience with the delivery was not good.

Alternatively, if you really think that your delivery driver didn't do a good job, you can leave a bad review or you can also report and complain to Doordash to explain why you’re not leaving a tip. Keep in mind that after a customer complaint, a delivery driver can be permanently banned from the platform.

You Caught Your Doordash Delivery Driver Eating Food

If you suspect or you surprise your Doordash driver eating your food, not only are you entitled to not tip but you can also report the problem to Doordash.

Keep in mind that Delivery drivers who reportedly ate customers' food are immediately banned from the platform.

What If I Don't Tip?

In the United States, tipping is simply part of the culture, just as brushing your teeth in the morning is part of what we usually do.

You won't get any less service than if you tip and if you choose to tip in advance, this will not speed up your order. However, Dashers will really appreciate you if you tip 20% and return for another go!

Finally, a thread about tipping is usually 82 posts long by the time a couple of days have gone by because the topic is personal and everyone wants to disagree with the previous poster. Deciding if you want to tip and how much should be something decided based on your experience and personal values and beliefs. You probably won’t tip the same for every order you make.
