Today, we are fortunate enough to have a number of food delivery services that provide contactless delivery and bring our favorite delicacies to our homes while we chill on our couches. However, even a cheap meal delivered to your home can come with a big bill, including delivery fees, upcharges, services fees, and tips.
The pizza you ordered for your movie marathon, which was initially $25, may have cost you $50 with all fees added. So, what’s the solution? Should you stop using food delivery services?
Although that is one way to counter these additional charges, there is another workaround.
The DoorDash DashPass is a remarkable subscription option for people who regularly use the food delivery service and want to save money off delivery fees and other miscellaneous charges.
In this DoorDash pass review, we explore the features of the pass, discuss its eligibility requirements, and determine if it is for everyone.
The DoorDash DashPass is a subscription service offering you unlimited free deliveries from thousands of restaurants on eligibility orders. The restaurants that feature the Door Dash Dash Pass logo offer $0 delivery for orders on DoorDash.
Even better, the Doordash subscription service also applies to convenience stores and grocery stores in your area. According to DoorDash’s official website, you can save $4 to $5 on every order with the DashPass while enjoying an unlimited $0 delivery fee.
Additionally, restaurant service charges are limited at 5% when you order using the DashPass.

Before you get all excited about its benefits, you need to know how much is DoorDash DashPass.
Well, the subscription costs $9.99 a month, and in exchange, you get a ton of benefits, as discussed above. Doordash offers discounted Dashpass to college students.
Another thing that makes DashPass a good pick is that you can cancel dashpass after free trial. You do not have to commit to paying this fee every month if you decide you no longer want the subscription.
Simply cancel whenever you want.
The good news is that you can try the Dashpass for free. The Dashpass trial is a 30 days test to experience all the benefits before committing to a paid subscription. The good news is that you do not need a dash pass promo code to start your Dashpass free trial.
You do not have to pay any additional fees other than the monthly $9.99 with DashPass. However, DashPass does not cover the service fees, tips, and taxes. You are still liable to pay the restaurant service fees, driver’s tips, and other miscellaneous charges.
The Dashpass minimum order is $12.
The main DashPass benefits include free Doordash delivery and 10% off on larger orders. Keeping that in mind, how much is DoorDash delivery? You can calculate this by subtracting the delivery fee from your regular order.
Suppose, you typically order a $10 meal from a nearby restaurant, and the delivery fee is $4.
When you place this order with DashPass, provided the restaurant is eligible, you will have to pay $10 only. Then, you can tip your driver as you see fit.
Let’s say your total order amount, including the service charges and other fees, is $40, while the delivery fee is $10. You will get 10% off it since the order is greater than $12. Plus, the delivery fee will be waived off.
So, instead of paying $50 for this delivery, you will pay $36.
Before you get a DashPass subscription, you need to check if the restaurants in your area or the ones you normally order food from are eligible for DashPass benefits.
You can find the eligible restaurants on DoorDash’s website by typing in your zip code.
Alternatively, you can check for the DashPass logo in front of the restaurant’s name on your app. Look for a green checkmark. If there is one, the restaurant is eligible for DashPass orders.
While not every restaurant is DashPass eligible, most of them are. But if you live in a remote area or a smaller city, your local restaurants may not be listed on DashPass eligibility list.
Meanwhile, residents of metropolises, such as New York City, should not have any trouble getting DashPass perks on their food delivery orders.

Chase has partnered with DoorDash to offer complimentary Doordash premium memberships to most of its cardholders. A one-year DashPass subscription costs nearly $120, but Chase cardholders can get a year for free.
Meanwhile, existing DashPass members who get an eligible Chase card can also enjoy a complimentary year of DashPass services. Here are the cards eligible for this offer:
If you have one of the following Chase cards, you will get three months of complementary DashPass subscription.
After that, you will be enrolled automatically for another nine months at a 50% discount. You can cancel your subscription at any point in this duration. To benefit from this offer, you should register your eligible credit card as the payment method in the DoorDash app.
Finally, activate your monthly subscription plan, and you’re good to go. You can also sign up for membership from DoorDash’s website.
The DashPass Chase partnership benefits people who already use DoorDash excessively and want to get a free year of DashPass benefits.
In our view, the good thing about this subscription is that you have to add your Chase card as a payment method to get the complimentary Doordash subscription. Thus, you will not be in a situation where you have a DashPass membership that you did not want in the first place.
But here’s the downside. Once your complimentary period ends, your subscription will be automatically renewed at the standard rate, which is $9.99 a month.
If you have a Chase Freedom Unlimited or a Chase Freedom card, you get 50% off your DoorDash membership for nine months after the free three-month period ends. Once these nine months are over, you will be enrolled automatically into the $9.99 per month subscription plan.
On the other hand, if you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve cards, you will get enrolled automatically into the $9.99 per month standard rate plan after your complimentary duration ends.
While this feature of the Chase Freedom DashPass and other cards might seem convenient to some people, it can also be problematic.
Most people sign up for subscriptions, only use them for the first few weeks or months due to the novelty factor, and then forget about them until they wake up one day with $9.99 deducted from their bank account.
Sure enough, you can cancel your DoorDash DashPass subscription whenever you want, but would you remember to do it the day before your free membership ends? If yes, then you should absolutely get the Chase DashPass.
If not, you should ponder getting the membership for a bit longer.
According to the Terms and Conditions, you need to cancel your subscription one day before the next subscription renewal. If you fail to do so, you will be charged for the month.
At the moment, it is not clear if you can cancel your subscription during the free membership period and still benefit from its perks until the complimentary period ends. If this was true, it would be great news.
But DoorDash does not mention anything of this sort in the Terms and Conditions.
Now that you know what is DashPass, let us dissect if it really helps you save any money. Each user case differs, depending on where you live, the number of times a month you order from DoorDash, and eligible restaurants in your area.
So, there is no one-for-all answer to this question. Rather, you have to do your own calculations to determine if DashPass is worth the price for you. Take a look at our comparison with the Uber Eats Pass and the Grubhub Plus subscription.
According to DoorDash, you can expect to save $4 to $5 on each order, which means you only have to place two orders a month to make up for the $9.99 subscription fee.
Here’s how we calculated the subscription’s worth:
When you order food from DoorDash, you have to consider two types of fees: service and delivery. We will compare both fees with regards to DashPass to help you decide if the savings are worth paying $9.99 per month.
Delivery fees normally depend on your distance from the restaurant.
As a rule of thumb, the more distant you are from the restaurant’s location, the higher the delivery fees. Some eateries also have flat delivery fees on all orders.
Since DashPass offers $0 delivery fees on select restaurants, you can save a lot of money on every order. On average, the delivery fees range from $1.59 to $3.09. When you order with a DashPass, you save this money.
Suppose you use DashPass five times a month. You have already broken even with the monthly subscription fee. Let’s discuss a few specific examples discussed in this Google Sheet created after thorough research:
If you order 4 Crunchwrap Supremes from Taco Bell, you will have to pay $ 3.99 in delivery fees.
For two Chicken bowls from Chipotle, the delivery fee is $2.99.
On average, the delivery fee on DoorDash is $2.59, based on the data from popular restaurants like McDonald’s, My Burger, Five Guys, Chipotle, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s.
Likewise, New York Times conducted a comparison between the delivery charges of four top food delivery apps. The results found that DoorDash has an average delivery fee of $1.99, substantially increasing the final cost.
When you use DashPass for your food delivery orders, you pay a $0 fee on eligible restaurants, adding up to a lot of savings by the end of the month.
Along with delivery fees, restaurants also charge service fees. According to the New York Times comparison, the average service fee on DoorDash is $1.20.
Meanwhile, the Loup Funds research showed the average service fee to be $3.48 on orders from popular restaurants, as mentioned above.
As you can imagine, the service fees can add up, depending on your order size and where you order from. DashPass drops the service fees to a flat 5%, which reduces the cost significantly.
Let us explain this with an example. If you order food worth $40, you may have to pay anywhere from 10% to 15% in service fees. For this example, suppose you are charged 10%, which will be $4.
But if you have DashPass, the service fees will be dropped to 5%, which is only $2. So, you are saving half the amount you would have to pay without a DashPass.
Along with lower fees, DashPass also offers promotions and discounts exclusively available to members. So, you get access to deals on your favorite restaurants that can be cheaper than buying from the standard menu.
Besides the $0 delivery fee, you also enjoy 10% off your restaurant orders if they are over $25. That further saves you money, especially if you regularly place large orders.
If you think that the Doordash delivery fee is too expensive, considering the savings on fees and additional discounts you get with DashPass, we can comfortably say that the subscription is worth the price.
You only have to place two to three orders a month to break even with the membership fee.
However, if you barely use DoorDash - less than five times a month - you are better off without a DashPass. The subscription is ideal for people who regularly use DoorDash not only for restaurant food delivery orders but also for grocery shopping.
